1978 fue el año en el que empecé a comprar mis propios discos. Algunos de los que aparecen en la lista los compré en casete al poco de salir, como mucho el año siguiente. Es por eso que aquí hay discos a los que le tengo mucho cariño porque llevan conmigo más de 40 años, además de por su calidad. Estamos en el año de la explosión de la New Wave, con grupos como Police, The Jam o Blondie que incluso hoy están entre mis favoritos de siempre. Un veterano Bob Dylan protagoniza su enésima resurrección con un gran disco, pero a la vez hay una buena cantidad de enormes debuts (Dire Straits, Kate Bush, Nick Lowe, Magazine, The Cars, los ya mencionados The Police…) en la lista, lo que le da un aire fresco y novedoso. Una lista juvenil, ecléctica y entusiasta como era yo con 12 años, donde caben por igual dinosaurios como The Kinks o The Rolling Stones y vanguardistas como Wire o Funkadelic, grupos progresivos como Genesis junto al pop más inmediato de Cheap Trick, el rock de AC/DC y el soul de Marvin Gaye.

Algún día seremos conscientes de lo que significaron The Police en su momento. O de lo que no significaron, porque eran un verso suelto que no encajaba en el punk por mucho que intentaran meterlos con calzador por temas como «Next to you» o «So lonely». Incluso en esas canciones se respiraba otra cosa, un estilo propio que algunos dieron en llamar Reggae blanco. Pero las etiquetas se quedaban cortas para un disco donde convivía el pop punk de «Roxanne» o «Can’t stand losing you» con esa brutalidad llamada «Masoko Tanga» que cerraba el álbum.
